• MiYOSMART iQ Halts Myopia Progression in Nearly All Young Children in Landmark Trial

    A new clinical trial presented at ARVO 2026 by HOYA Vision Care and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is turning heads in myopia management. The randomized controlled trial enrolled 196 school children in Hong Kong, ages 4 to 12, and the results were striking: the new spectacle lens design halted clinically relevant myopia progression in 9 out of 10 children during the first year of wear.

    The lenses use DIMS (Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) technology, and the numbers back up the headline claim. Children wearing the MiYOSMART iQ lenses showed no myopia progress on average at 12 months, with axial elongation reported to be below or comparable to that of emmetropic children – meaning treated eyes grew no faster than eyes with no refractive error at all. That’s a high bar for any optical intervention to clear.

    What sets this trial apart from prior DIMS studies is the age range. This marked the first time myopia control efficacy with DIMS Technology-based spectacle lenses was demonstrated in children as young as 4 years old, extending the evidence base well below the age brackets most myopia control trials have historically targeted. Researchers noted that initiating effective myopia control early in life may reduce cumulative progression and lower the risk of developing high myopia and associated sight-threatening diseases later in life – the earlier-intervention argument that’s been gaining traction across the field.

    HOYA framed it as a milestone moment: “Until today, no trial conducted on myopia control spectacle lens has shown this level of effectiveness in controlling the condition, ” said John Goltermann Lassen, CEO of HOYA Vision Care. As always with single-year data, the real test will be whether this level of control holds up over multi-year follow up, but for a first-year readout, it’s one fo the stronger efficacy signals the spectacle-lens category has produced.
